Porthallow Beach
Cornwall
Porthallow Beach is a large, open shingle and coarse sand beach on the eastern Lizard Peninsula, one of the most easterly beaches on the Cornish coast and facing directly into the English Channel. The Five Pilchards pub sits directly above the beach, giving it an immediate and useful anchor point. The beach is wide and open with a slightly raw character, the large smooth stones and shingle giving way to sand in patches at low tide. A stream flows down from the village across the beach to the sea.
Dogs are welcome at Porthallow year-round with no PSPO restrictions, making it a consistently accessible dog friendly beach in all seasons. The Five Pilchards pub is one of the most dog-friendly on the Lizard with a welcoming attitude to dogs in its bar and garden, making it a natural start or finish point for beach visits. The stream crossing provides fresh water for dogs, and the open beach gives good room to run on the firm shingle and sand mix. The lack of facilities beyond the pub keeps visitor numbers modest. The beach connects to the South West Coast Path which runs along the clifftops above, and the Lizard coast in both directions provides excellent walking.
