Saunton Sands

Saunton Sands stretches for over three miles along the North Devon coast, backed by the rolling dune system of Braunton Burrows — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This is one of Devon's longest and most spectacular beaches, with fine golden sand, consistent Atlantic surf, and a sense of scale that most beaches simply cannot match. At low tide the beach opens into an enormous expanse of walkable sand, and the dune landscape behind adds a wild, untouched dimension that elevates this far beyond a typical seaside outing.

Dogs are welcome year-round on this outstanding dog friendly beach with no seasonal ban, making Saunton one of the most reliable options on the North Devon coast. Dogs should be on leads near the beach huts at the northern end and are not permitted on the small section north of the slipway, but heading south the beach is wide open for off-lead running. The firm low-tide sand provides superb ground for long walks, and the dune edges carry the earthy scent of marram grass and rabbit trails. For reactive dogs, a shortcut through the dunes from the left side of the car park leads directly to the quieter southern stretches.
