Southsea Beach

Southsea Beach stretches for over two miles along the southern edge of Portsea Island from Old Portsmouth to Eastney, forming one of the most complete urban seafronts on the south coast. The beach is principally shingle, backed by a wide promenade that links a series of Victorian and Edwardian landmarks including Southsea Castle, the D-Day Story Museum, South Parade Pier, and the Blue Reef Aquarium. The view south across the Solent takes in the Isle of Wight on the horizon and a constant procession of shipping moving in and out of Portsmouth Harbour. At low tide the shingle gives way to patches of sand and exposed rock, noticeably widening the available beach. The Southsea Coastal Scheme, completed in early 2026, added around one million tonnes of shingle to this frontage, significantly widening the beach between the Pyramids and Eastney.

Dogs are subject to seasonal restrictions along part of this frontage under Portsmouth City Council's PSPO. Between 1 May and 30 September, dogs are banned from the beach between Southsea Castle and the Eastney Coffee Cup. Year-round dog access is available east of the Coffee Cup, towards Eastney Beach, which is a quieter and more relaxed stretch for dog walking. Outside the restriction season, the full length of beach is accessible. Multiple pay and display car parks line the esplanade, and there are public toilets, cafes, and beach hire facilities at regular intervals along the promenade.
