Staithes Beach

Staithes Beach is a small, characterful strip of sand and rock tucked into the harbour of one of Yorkshire's most atmospheric fishing villages. The village itself is a tangle of narrow lanes and stone cottages clinging to the cliffside above the harbour, and the beach sits at the bottom of it all, framed by dramatic cliffs and the old harbour walls. At low tide more sand and rock is exposed, revealing fossils and sea life in the pools, but at high tide the beach virtually disappears — timing is everything here.

Dogs are welcome year-round on this atmospheric dog friendly beach, and the combination of harbour, rock pools, and cliff-framed setting provides more sensory interest per square metre than most full-sized beaches. This is not a beach for marathon runs — it suits slower, investigative walks where dogs can nose through tideline debris and explore rock pools. The village above has dog friendly cafes and pubs for warming up afterward, making Staithes ideal as a shorter beach exploration followed by refreshments with genuine character.
