Stolford Beach
Somerset
Stolford Beach is a quiet, exposed stretch of pebbles and shingle backed by a storm bank, looking out across the vast mudflats of Bridgwater Bay and the Bristol Channel beyond. At low tide, extensive mud and sand flats are revealed, stretching far out toward the water, with bands of shale and limestone containing occasional fossil finds. The setting is flat and open, with farmland behind the storm bank and views across to the Welsh coast on clear days. Stolford is one of the least visited beaches on the Somerset coast, and its raw, unadorned character appeals to those who prefer their coastline without facilities or crowds.
Dogs are welcome year-round on this dog friendly beach with no restrictions, and the wide open space and absence of other visitors make it an excellent off-lead location for dogs with reliable recall. The mudflats at low tide can be treacherous, with warning signs about dangerous mud, so dogs should be kept from venturing too far out onto the flats. The pebble storm bank provides firmer footing. A small parking area overlooks the beach directly. There are no facilities at all, so this is a bring-everything destination. The combination of Stolford with a walk inland to Stogursey Castle makes for a satisfying longer outing of around five miles.
