Sugary Cove
Devon
Sugary Cove is a small shingle and rock cove below Dartmouth Castle, reachable by a steep winding path from the road above or via the South West Coast Path from the town. The castle sits directly above, and the grassy area at the top of the descent provides a good picnic spot with harbour views before the path drops to the beach. The cove itself is tight and rocky, more suited to a swim and a sit than a long walk, and at high tide it largely disappears beneath the water. A tea room and toilets at Dartmouth Castle are a short walk back up the hill, and limited road parking is available near the castle entrance.
Dogs are welcome at Sugary Cove year round with no restrictions, and the combination of a year-round castle cafe, immediate coast path access and proximity to Dartmouth makes it a useful option for dog owners based in or visiting the town. The cove is best visited around low tide when the beach is most accessible and the rocky foreshore opens up for exploration. The tide moves quickly here: check times before descending if you plan to stay for any length of time. The path down is steep and sometimes wet underfoot, so suitable footwear is worth putting on before leaving the car.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sugary Cove welcomes dogs with no restrictions, making it a solid year-round option for dog owners visiting the Dartmouth area. It's a small, tucked-away cove rather than a sweeping beach, so it suits a paddle and a sit rather than a long run, but dogs can explore the rocky foreshore freely when the tide is out.
Yes, there are no seasonal dog restrictions at Sugary Cove, so you're free to visit at any time of year. Combined with the nearby Dartmouth Castle tea room being open year round, it makes for a reliable dog-friendly outing even in the quieter months.
The most important thing is to check the tides before you go , the cove largely disappears at high tide and the water moves quickly, so timing your visit around low tide makes a real difference. The path down from the road is steep and can be slippery underfoot, so decent footwear is worth putting on before you leave the car. Parking is limited near Dartmouth Castle, and there are no facilities at the beach itself, though the castle has a tea room and toilets a short walk back up the hill.
