Westcliff Beach
Essex
Westcliff Beach is a dog friendly sandy beach on the Southend-on-Sea seafront, sitting between Chalkwell Beach to the west and the Three Shells and town centre beaches to the east. The beach is a mix of sand and shingle, with groynes breaking up the shoreline, and like much of the Southend waterfront it is heavily influenced by the Thames Estuary tidal cycle: at high tide the beach can be entirely submerged, while at low tide a large expanse of wet sand and mud is revealed. The promenade above the beach is accessible at all times and offers sweeping views across the estuary towards Kent. Southend boasts the world's longest pleasure pier as well as a wide range of resort amenities, making the broader waterfront a well-served destination.
Dogs are welcome at Westcliff Beach outside of the summer season, with a restriction from the beginning of May to the end of September. The promenade runs the full length of the seafront and is a popular year-round route for dog walkers. Facilities include a cafe, toilets, a shop and deck chair hire, with disabled access available. Pay and display parking is nearby on the esplanade. A short distance along the front is the Crowstone obelisk visible at low tide on the mudflats between Westcliff and Chalkwell, a historic marker for the City of London's Thames jurisdiction. Rossi's Ice Cream Emporium and The Cliffs Pavilion theatre are both within a short walk.

Westcliff Beach is dog friendly outside of the summer season, earning a 5/10 rating on our directory. The promenade running the full length of the seafront is open to dogs year round, making it a popular route for local dog walkers even when the beach itself has restrictions in place.
Are dogs allowed at Westcliff Beach year round?
Dogs are not permitted on the beach itself year round — there is a seasonal restriction running from the beginning of May to the end of September. Outside of those months, dogs are welcome on the beach, and the promenade above the shoreline remains accessible to dogs at any time of year.
What should I know before visiting Westcliff Beach with my dog?
The beach is shaped by the Thames Estuary tidal cycle, which means at high tide the sand can be completely submerged, while low tide reveals a wide expanse of wet sand and mudflats — so it's worth checking the tides before you head down. Facilities on site include a cafe, toilets, a shop and deck chair hire, with disabled access available, and pay and display parking can be found on the esplanade. If you're visiting outside the summer restriction period, the walk along the promenade towards Chalkwell also gives you a view of the historic Crowstone obelisk, visible on the mudflats at low tide.
