Weymouth Beach

Dorset

Dog Friendly Rating: 6/10 A classic sandy beach with designated year round dog areas and wide open space outside the summer restriction months.

Weymouth Beach is one of Dorset's most famous stretches of sand — a wide, gently curving bay with fine golden sand, shallow sheltered water, and a traditional promenade backed by the full infrastructure of a proper seaside town. The beach is spacious even on busier days, with a gentle shelf into calm water that makes it one of the safest swimming beaches on the south coast. The town centre, harbour, and a full range of restaurants sit just behind the seafront.

This dog friendly beach restricts the central beach and Greenhill section from May to September, but dogs are welcome year-round in the designated exercise area beside the Pavilion at the harbour end and on the stretch from Greenhill Groyne to Overcombe at the eastern end. Outside summer, the whole beach opens up into a completely different experience — quieter, more spacious, and far more relaxed for dog owners. The soft, clean sand and sheltered bay mean calm paddling conditions, and the sweeping views across the bay give it a sense of space that few other town beaches can match. Dogs must be on lead on the promenade at all times.

Weymouth Beach is dog friendly, though with some seasonal restrictions to be aware of. There are designated year-round areas for dogs , including a dedicated exercise area beside the Pavilion at the harbour end and the stretch from Greenhill Groyne to Overcombe at the eastern end , and outside summer the whole beach opens up considerably, making it a much more relaxed visit for dog owners.

Yes, dogs are welcome year-round in the designated areas at either end of the beach. Between May and September, the central beach and Greenhill section have restrictions in place, but outside those months the entire beach is accessible , quieter, more spacious, and well worth the visit if you can time it right.

The main thing to plan around is the seasonal restriction: from May to September, dogs are limited to the designated exercise area near the Pavilion and the Greenhill Groyne to Overcombe stretch at the eastern end. Dogs must also be kept on lead on the promenade at all times, regardless of season. On the plus side, the bay offers calm, shallow water and soft sand, and the town has plenty of facilities close by including cafes, restaurants, and several pay and display car parks along the seafront.
