Whitesands Bay
Pembrokeshire
Whitesands Bay is a wide, open beach near St Davids on the Pembrokeshire coast, a sweeping arc of golden sand popular with surfers and backed by the dramatic headlands of the St Davids Peninsula. The beach faces west into the Atlantic, catching consistent swell, and the views toward Ramsey Island and the offshore rocks add a wild, elemental quality. The proximity to Britain's smallest city means good facilities and refreshments are close at hand without the beach itself feeling commercialised.
This dog friendly beach restricts dogs from the main beach from May to September, so this is primarily an autumn-through-spring destination for dog walkers. Outside the restricted months, the wide sands provide excellent off-lead space with firm walking ground at lower tides. The surf zone offers exciting play for confident water dogs, though conditions can be unpredictable and supervision is important. The coastal path connects in both directions from the beach, extending the outing along some of Pembrokeshire's most spectacular clifftop scenery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Whitesands Bay is a fantastic destination for dogs and earns a 9/10 dog-friendly rating on Wildpack Collective. Outside the seasonal restrictions, the wide golden sands give dogs plenty of room to roam off-lead, and the coastal path connecting from the beach opens up some of Pembrokeshire's most spectacular clifftop walking.
Dogs are restricted from the main beach between May and September, so it's best treated as an autumn-through-spring destination for dog walkers. The good news is that outside those months you'll have the sweeping sands largely to yourselves, making it a wonderful off-season escape.
Check the tide before you go , the beach offers firm, wide walking ground at lower tides, which is ideal for dogs. If your dog loves the water, the surf zone can be exciting but conditions off the Atlantic-facing coast can be unpredictable, so keep a close eye on them. Parking is in the National Trust pay-and-display car park (free for members), and there's a seasonal café and toilets on site, with further facilities and refreshments a short drive away in St Davids.
