Whitstable Beach

Kent

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A shingle beach at the heart of Kent's famous oyster town, with colourful beach huts, a working harbour and year-round dog access on most sections.

Whitstable Beach is a long, characterful stretch of shingle running westward from the harbour of one of Kent's most celebrated coastal towns. The beach is divided by wooden groynes and backed by colourful beach huts, with the working harbour at its eastern end adding a distinctly maritime atmosphere. Whitstable is famous for its oysters, its independent shops and galleries, and its thriving food scene, all of which sit within easy reach of the beach. At low tide, a natural shingle causeway known as The Street extends out to sea, a distinctive feature visible from the Tankerton Slopes to the east.

Dogs are welcome year-round on most sections of Whitstable Beach, though seasonal restrictions apply on the Tankerton stretch from 1 May to 30 September. Outside the restricted zone the beach provides relaxed off-lead walking along the shingle, with the harbour area and groynes providing interesting scent and shelter. The town's strong food culture means there are plenty of dog-friendly cafes and pubs for post-walk refreshments, and the largely flat terrain suits dogs of all ages. The shingle underfoot is firm and the beach holds up well in all weather, making this a reliable year-round option for dog owners visiting the north Kent coast.
