The wood burner here comes with wood for the whole of the stay rather than a basket for the first night, which is a small thing until the fourth evening. Forest Corner takes eight across five bedrooms at Godshill in Hampshire, on the western side of the New Forest, dog friendly, two dogs allowed and a third considered if you ring and ask.

Five bedrooms is a great many for a cottage and one of them, a twin, sits on the ground floor where the dogs are. Above are two doubles, the larger keeping its own shower room, a second twin and a single, with the family bathroom and a separate WC up there as well. Downstairs the kitchen and dining room are open to each other round a refectory table that seats ten.

The owners state their rule plainly: no dog on the furniture, on the beds or above the ground floor. That leaves the ground floor, and the ground floor is where the cottage lives, with a sunny conservatory off the dining room, a WC and utility, and the sitting room with the burner. The garden is enclosed and secluded, with furniture and a charcoal barbecue standing out on it, and it belongs to the two dogs.

Godshill counts as a hamlet rather than a village, and the cycling and walking start at the door, with routes that go from a stroll to most of a day. Fordingbridge is two miles off, a riverside town with a long medieval bridge over the Avon and a supermarket for whatever the cottage has run out of. The Fighting Cocks is a two minute walk. Two dogs get open ground immediately and a town when somebody needs one.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Forest Corner dog friendly?

Yes, Forest Corner welcomes dogs — up to two as standard, with a third potentially considered if you call ahead and ask. The enclosed garden is very much the dogs' domain, and there's open ground for walking and cycling right from the door, with Fordingbridge just two miles away when you need a town.

  • Are dogs allowed at Forest Corner year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so there's nothing to suggest they aren't welcome throughout the year. If you have specific dates in mind, it's always worth checking directly with the owners to confirm availability.

  • What should I know before visiting Forest Corner with my dog?

The owners are clear about their house rules: dogs are welcome on the ground floor but not on the furniture, beds, or anywhere above the ground floor. That said, the ground floor has plenty going for it — a sitting room with a wood burner, a conservatory, a utility room, and the ground floor twin bedroom where dogs can sleep. The enclosed garden is also theirs to enjoy freely.
