The terrace at the back of this cottage looks over the River Avon and the country the other side of it, and the lawn below the terrace is fenced on all sides with a gate in it. Old Avon Cottage stands on a working farm at Godshill Wood near Fordingbridge, at the Hampshire end of the New Forest, dog friendly accommodation for six and two dogs allowed.

A covered porch comes first, then an entrance hall with room for a week of coats and two dogs' worth of mud. Beyond it the kitchen and dining space run together, farmhouse fashion, with an armchair for whoever is not cooking. The sitting room past it keeps exposed brickwork, oak beams and a wood burner whose first fire is laid before you arrive. The bathroom is on this floor too, one for the whole house, bath and separate shower in it.

Three bedrooms, all king size, all of them split into singles if you ask at booking. Outside, the fenced lawn is where two dogs go and the raised deck above it takes the hot tub, which the owners keep for over-16s. There is a washing station out there for dogs and wellies together, and on a working farm that is a provision rather than a decoration.

The Avon runs below the farm and the valley here is water meadow and grazing rather than woodland, so what leaves this doorstep is flatter and greener than the heath east of it. Woodgreen is the village along the road, a green with houses set round it. Two dogs get river and field straight off the farm, and the National Park proper on the days somebody wants the other sort of ground.
