1 / 22The Bolt Hole - Hayling Island
Hayling Island, Hampshire
A four bedroom house for eight on Hayling Island in Hampshire with a fully enclosed garden, a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor and two dogs welcome, close to Sandy Point.
The name is a joke against the size. The Bolt Hole sleeps eight, or nine at a push, across four bedrooms on three floors at the south east corner of Hayling Island, and its garden is fully enclosed with a patio and a barbecue inside the fence. It is dog friendly for two dogs, and Sandy Point's sand begins 0.3 miles away.
The house is arranged in layers. Kitchen and diner take the ground floor, a sofa and a television in there as well as the table, with a double bedroom and the bathroom beside them and patio doors out to the garden. The lounge is a floor up with table football at one end, and the top floor holds a king, a bunk room and a double bunk room with a shower room between. Two dogs get a whole floor with the kitchen, a bed and the garden on it, and the rest of the house stacked above.
Two bunk rooms and a table football say who this is for: a family with children of an age to argue, and two dogs of an age to referee. The garden is where it all ends up, enclosed, patio, barbecue, and a fence both dogs have walked before anyone has found the kettle.
The island's south eastern tip is Sandy Point, where Chichester Harbour empties into the Solent through a channel a few hundred yards wide, and West Wittering stands on the far bank, 1.2 miles off and unreachable without a boat. Eastoke beach runs west from the point along the south shore, and Langstone Harbour on the other side has a seal colony. A dog gets sand, shingle and a harbour mouth to sit and watch the boats come through.
