Two bedrooms and both of them doubles, which quietly says who this is for. Four adults, two dogs, and no children under five, that last being the owners' rule rather than an accident of layout. The Coach House Cottage is a dog friendly stay at Ashurst on the northeast side of the New Forest, with lawn, patio and fencing round all of it behind. Ashurst has woodland on three sides.

It is a coach house, so the shape is not a cottage shape: rooms placed where a building doing that job needed them, and a shower room at ground level. Behind it the enclosure splits between grass and paving. There is a lockable shed for bicycles, which counts here because the forest tracks suit two wheels better than most places do, and two dogs will keep pace with a bicycle all day given the chance.

Two couples with two dogs between them is the obvious booking and the one the layout was arranged for. Nobody is on a sofa bed, nobody shares with a child, and the animals have an enclosure that holds them while the humans work out the day. Ashurst is a quiet thing to come back to, which is the other half of the argument.

South of the village the Beaulieu road runs out across open heath, and Hatchet Pond lies at the end of it, a big shallow water on Beaulieu Heath with gravel tracks going off in several directions from the shore. Closer in, the Deerleap and the woods on Ashurst's own edge are five minutes on foot and are proper old forest, oak and beech with nothing planted in rows. Two dogs get both kinds inside a week.
