Bennachie: Mither Tap Summit Walk

Aberdeenshire

Dog Friendly Rating:9/10The iconic Aberdeenshire summit walk up Mither Tap from the Bennachie Visitor Centre, rewarding dogs and owners with a big Iron Age hill fort and enormous views.

Dog friendly and a local favourite, this well-signposted climb rises from the Bennachie Visitor Centre through pine forest and onto open heather moorland to the rocky summit of Mither Tap at 518 metres, crowned with the remains of a dark ages hill fort. The path is wide and clear for most of the ascent, with waymarkers throughout and a final rocky scramble onto the tor itself that most dogs manage without fuss.

Dogs can run off the lead on the forest and moorland sections provided they have good recall, though they should be on a lead around the car park and on the final summit rocks where people cluster. Livestock is not an issue on this route. Go early on weekends because the Visitor Centre car park does fill. There are toilets and information boards at the start, and the summit views sweep from Royal Deeside to the Moray coast on a clear day.

Bennachie: Mither Tap Summit Walk is rated 9 out of 10 for dog friendliness and is a well-loved local route for dogs and their owners. The path is wide and well-waymarked from the Bennachie Visitor Centre up through pine forest and open heather moorland, and there's no livestock to worry about along the way. • Can dogs be off lead at Bennachie: Mither Tap Summit Walk?

Dogs with good recall can enjoy off-lead time across the forest and moorland sections of the route. It's worth keeping them on a lead around the car park at the start and on the final summit rocks, where the terrain can be tricky and people tend to gather. Livestock isn't a concern on this route, so the main thing is having a reliable recall before letting them run.

On a clear day, the summit rewards you with views stretching from Royal Deeside to the Moray coast, which makes the effort very worthwhile.
