Bolton Abbey and The Strid

North Yorkshire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A beautifully varied estate walk combining ruined priory, ancient woodland and the most dangerous stretch of river in England, set in the lower reaches of Wharfedale.

The River Wharfe runs through the Devonshire Estate at Bolton Abbey, and this 8 km circular follows the riverside through Strid Wood to the point where the full width of the river is forced through a narrow limestone channel barely a metre across. The Strid is remarkable to see but genuinely dangerous: the current beneath the surface is powerful and the wet rocks are treacherous, and it has been fatal on numerous occasions. Beyond The Strid, the route continues through mature deciduous woodland before looping back across open pasture with views to the twelfth-century priory ruins and the famous stepping stones across the Wharfe. The 120 m of climbing is gentle and the paths are soft and well maintained throughout.

Dogs find this one of the most absorbing dog friendly walks in the Dales. Strid Wood carries layers of damp riverside scent, rich deciduous leaf mould and the mineral smell of wet limestone that keeps noses working constantly. Leads are essential at The Strid itself and wherever the path runs close to the river's edge, for genuine safety rather than rules. The woodland sections allow more freedom on quieter days, though the estate asks dogs to be under close control at all times, and livestock graze the meadow sections on the return. The River Wharfe offers safe water access at calmer points away from The Strid. The gentle gradients and soft paths suit dogs of most abilities, making this a walk that combines real interest with accessibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Bolton Abbey and The Strid dog friendly?

Bolton Abbey and The Strid scores 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness, and it's easy to see why it's such a popular choice in the Dales. The route offers rich woodland scenting, safe river access at calmer points along the Wharfe, gentle gradients that suit most dogs, and dog-friendly outdoor seating at the Cavendish Pavilion café.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Bolton Abbey and The Strid?

The estate asks that dogs are kept under close control throughout, and leads are essential at The Strid itself and wherever the path runs close to the river's edge , the current is genuinely dangerous and the rocks are slippery. The woodland sections offer more freedom on quieter days, but dogs will need to be back on lead for the return section across open pasture where livestock graze.

  • What should I know before visiting Bolton Abbey and The Strid with my dog?

The most important thing to be aware of is The Strid itself , a point where the full width of the River Wharfe is forced through a channel barely a metre across, creating a powerful and unpredictable current beneath the surface. It has been fatal on numerous occasions, so keep dogs firmly on lead here and well away from the water's edge. The meadow sections on the return pass through grazed livestock areas, so be prepared for that too. Parking at the estate car park costs around £12.50 booked in advance or £15 on the day.
