Bransdale is one of the most secluded dales in the North York Moors, and the circuit from Cockayne at its head climbs over Rudland Rigg, loops along the West Side road high above the valley, then drops back past St Nicholas's isolated church. Underfoot is firm moor track and stone packhorse trail, muddy in winter and occasionally boggy after heavy rain.
