Bridgwater and Taunton Canal

The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal runs through the flat Somerset levels, and this 8 km out-and-back or circular follows the towpath through quiet farmland, passing under brick bridges and alongside reed-fringed banks where the water moves slowly if at all. The canal was built in the 1820s and retains its original character, with the towpath well defined and virtually flat throughout, barely 20 m of climbing across the full distance. The landscape on either side is open pastoral country, with the Quantock Hills visible to the west on clear days. The pace of the walk matches the water: steady, calm, and unhurried.

This is a dog friendly walk that works well for regular, low-effort outings. The canal carries rich waterside scent from the reeds, bankside vegetation and the still water itself, and dogs find the combination of water interest and flat, easy ground deeply satisfying. Off-lead potential is moderate along the towpath, with awareness needed for other walkers, cyclists and the water's edge. Some adjoining fields are grazed, so leads should be carried for sections where the towpath passes close to livestock. The flat, firm surface suits older dogs, dogs recovering from injury, or those who simply prefer gentler ground. A practical, calming walk that delivers more atmosphere than you might expect from a canal towpath.
