Caesar's Camp and Sandhurst Heath

Berkshire

Caesar's Camp sits on a ridge on the Surrey border east of Sandhurst, its Iron Age earthworks spreading across heathland that looks convincingly wild despite its suburban setting. The 6.1 km circuit on Crown Estate land takes in the fort ramparts, lowland heath, and the Edgbarrow Wood section — a mix of dry sandy heathland, old deciduous and conifer woodland, and the elevated grass of the hillfort itself. The views south from the ramparts reach across a landscape that remains surprisingly undeveloped.

Sandy tracks throughout mean this stays dry and firm when other walks in the area are compromised. Dogs tend to engage well with the varied terrain here — open heathland gives space to move, woodland between the glades rewards careful sniffing, and the earthwork banks of the hillfort itself are a reliable draw. Much of the circuit is off-lead accessible; heathland sections need leads between March and August for ground-nesting skylarks and nightjars. No facilities on route but Sandhurst town is close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Caesar's Camp and Sandhurst Heath dog friendly?

Caesar's Camp and Sandhurst Heath is a great choice for dogs, with varied terrain that tends to keep them well engaged , open heathland for a run, woodland to sniff around, and the ancient earthwork banks of the hillfort itself to explore. The sandy tracks throughout stay dry and firm year-round, which makes it a reliable option whatever the season. There are no facilities on the route itself, but Sandhurst town is close by if you need to pick up supplies.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Caesar's Camp and Sandhurst Heath?

Much of the 6.1 km circuit is accessible off lead, making it well suited to dogs who enjoy a bit of freedom. The exception is the heathland sections, where dogs should be kept on lead between March and August to protect ground-nesting skylarks and nightjars during the breeding season. Outside of those months, the open heathland and woodland offer good off-lead opportunities.

  • What should I know before visiting Caesar's Camp and Sandhurst Heath with my dog?

The walk is on Crown Estate land, so it's well maintained and the sandy tracks keep conditions good even when other local routes get muddy. If you're visiting between March and August, put leads on in the heathland sections to protect ground-nesting birds , this is a legal requirement during nesting season. There are no facilities on the route itself, so bring water for your dog; parking is available at Sandhurst Memorial Park (RG45 6NZ) or Edgbarrow Wood car park (RG45 6PP).
