Carding Mill Valley

Shropshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 9/10 A Long Mynd valley walk climbing onto the open upland plateau above Church Stretton, with wide moorland views at the top.

Carding Mill Valley opens from Church Stretton into the heart of the Long Mynd, a gentle start that quickly becomes something much bigger. This 9.7 km circuit follows the stream up the valley floor before climbing onto the open moorland plateau where the landscape transforms from sheltered valley to exposed, wind-swept heath with views across Shropshire. The 423 m of ascent is concentrated on the climb out of the valley, and the upper sections cross terrain that feels properly wild: heather, bilberry, rough grass and the occasional waterfall where streams drop off the plateau edge. The return descends through a different valley, giving the walk a satisfying circular feel with two distinct characters.

This is a dog friendly walk that starts gently and builds into something more demanding. The lower valley provides stream access and sheltered walking, while the moorland plateau gives dogs open space, wind, and the kind of rough ground that keeps them working. Off-lead potential is limited as livestock graze extensively across the Long Mynd, so leads are essential and awareness of sheep is critical throughout. The stream in the valley bottom offers drinking water and cooling on the ascent. The upper moorland is exposed and can be harsh in poor weather, so this walk suits fair days or at least days when you're prepared for wind and rain. Best suited to fit dogs comfortable with sustained climbing and open, exposed terrain.
