Crickley Hill and the Cotswold Way

Gloucestershire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10An accessible and varied country park walk with high off-lead potential on the open grassland and excellent on-site facilities; one of the most rewarding easy walks in the Cotswolds.

Crickley Hill Country Park sits on the Cotswold escarpment above Cheltenham, where a Neolithic and Iron Age hillfort crowns a promontory of Jurassic limestone with views across the Severn Valley to the Welsh hills. This 4 km circuit traces the archaeological earthworks, still visible as defensive banks and ditches, while moving through beech woodland and open chalk grassland managed for its botanical richness. The Cotswold Way long-distance path passes through the site, connecting this walk to the broader escarpment landscape. The 116 m of climbing is gentle, and the paths are well maintained throughout. The contrast between enclosed woodland and exposed escarpment edge gives the walk more variety than its short distance suggests.

Dogs get an engaging dog friendly walk here with the open grassland providing excellent off-lead potential where livestock are absent. The transition between shaded woodland floor and breezy, open hilltop creates constant changes in scent and light that keep dogs alert. The chalk grassland carries distinctive dry, herbal scent, while the woodland sections provide softer, damper conditions underfoot. The gentle terrain suits dogs of all ages and fitness levels. Water is available from streams in the lower areas but scarce on the exposed ridge, so carrying water is sensible on warmer days. The country park car park has good facilities. A compact walk that combines real views, genuine history and varied terrain in an easily accessible package.
