Cudmore Grove Coastal Walk

Essex

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A short coastal walk on Mersea Island with estuary views, fossils in the clay cliffs and a relaxed seaside feel.

Cudmore Grove Country Park sits at the eastern tip of Mersea Island in Essex, where the coastline meets the Blackwater Estuary in a landscape of salt marsh, low cliffs and open water. This 4 km circuit follows the coastal edge with views across the estuary to the mainland, passing through grassland and along the foreshore where the retreating cliffs expose fossil-rich London Clay. The 5 m of climbing is virtually non-existent, and the terrain is flat and easy throughout. The tidal landscape changes constantly, with the estuary filling and emptying twice daily and the light shifting across the mudflats in ways that make each visit slightly different.

This is a dog friendly walk with strong coastal character despite the gentle terrain. The salt marsh and tidal foreshore carry intense estuary scent that keeps dogs working, and the open, exposed setting provides wind and space. Off-lead potential is limited as the park is an important habitat for breeding and overwintering birds, and livestock graze some of the grassland areas, so leads are recommended during nesting season and near grazing land. The flat paths suit dogs of all ages and fitness levels. The exposed nature of the route means it can feel raw in winter wind, but this is part of the appeal for dogs who enjoy coastal conditions. Parking is available at the country park. A walk that showcases the quieter, wilder side of the Essex coast.
