Ditchling Beacon and the South Downs Ridge East

East Sussex

Ditchling Beacon is the highest point in East Sussex at 248 metres, and the out-and-back ridge walk east to Plumpton along the South Downs Way is one of the most sustained stretches of open downland walking in the county. The 10.8 km route stays high throughout, following a wide chalk ridge with the Weald rolling away north and the coastal plain visible south. The Beacon itself is a National Nature Reserve and the chalk wildflowers from May through August — orchids, scabious, trefoil — are exceptional.

Cattle and sheep are grazed along this ridge section to maintain the grassland, and leads are required throughout when livestock are present. The turf is firm in dry conditions but slippery on wet chalk — the ridge can become genuinely challenging in prolonged wet weather. No water on the route; carry enough for your dog. The views north on a clear morning are among the best in Sussex. Parking at the beacon car park, paid for non-NT members.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, dogs are welcome on this route along the South Downs ridge. It's a fantastic walk for dogs who enjoy open space and big skies, with 10.8 km of chalk grassland to explore between Ditchling Beacon and Plumpton.

Leads are required throughout when livestock are present, and cattle and sheep are actively grazed along this ridge section to maintain the grassland , so you should expect to keep your dog on lead for much of the route. It's worth coming prepared with a lead rather than assuming you'll get off-lead time here.

The most important thing to plan for is water , there are no facilities on the route, so carry enough for both of you for the full 10.8 km. The chalk turf is firm in dry conditions but can become slippery and genuinely tricky when wet, so footing is worth bearing in mind after rain. The ridge is also fully exposed with no shelter from the wind, which can make it a cold outing in blustery weather despite the excellent views.
