Felixstowe Ferry and the Deben Estuary

Suffolk

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10An easy estuary circular from the shingle hamlet of Felixstowe Ferry along the Deben and King's Fleet, with wide views across to Bawdsey Manor.

Felixstowe Ferry is a charmingly scruffy cluster of shingle, sheds, fishing boats and the tiny passenger ferry that links the south bank of the Deben to Bawdsey. This is a classic flat Suffolk dog friendly walk that heads inland along the sea wall beside the King's Fleet, a historic anchorage used by Edward III, before looping back to the hamlet via field edge paths. The route is suitable for most dogs and humans, with big skies, reed lined channels and no significant gradients.

Dogs can be off lead along most of the sea wall and inland stretches where there is no livestock, but leads are advised around the car park, the golf course boundary and where the path passes grazing marsh with cattle or sheep. The adjacent Felixstowe beach has seasonal dog restrictions between 1 May and 30 September on the main tourist stretch further south, but the Ferry end of the beach remains dog friendly year round. Terrain is flat compacted sea wall, short grass and some stony foreshore, with occasional muddy sections after rain. Facilities at Felixstowe Ferry include the Ferry Cafe, the Ferry Boat Inn and the Victoria pub, and public toilets near the Ferry Cafe. Parking is the pay and display car park next to the Ferry Cafe, coins only, which fills quickly on warm weekends.

The route is a flat, easy circular along the sea wall and field edge paths, well suited to most dogs, and the hamlet itself has a good range of facilities including the Ferry Cafe, the Ferry Boat Inn and the Victoria pub. Dogs can enjoy good stretches of off-lead freedom along most of the sea wall and the inland sections of the route where there is no livestock. • What should I know before visiting Felixstowe Ferry and the Deben Estuary with my dog?

The terrain is mostly flat compacted sea wall and short grass, though there can be muddy patches after rain and some stony foreshore near the beach, so paws-friendly footwear for you is a good idea.
