Hackfall Woods Circular (Grewelthorpe)
North Yorkshire
Hackfall Woods is a hidden gem above the River Ure near Grewelthorpe in North Yorkshire — a Woodland Trust site that feels properly wild without the drive deep into the Dales. This 6.4 km circular explores a steep-sided wooded gorge where rocky steps, mossy paths and unexpected viewpoints create constant surprises. The woodland sits high above the river, and the terrain drops and climbs through the trees with 158 metres of elevation gain that keeps things physically interesting. Georgian follies and grottos are scattered through the wood, remnants of an 18th-century pleasure garden now reclaimed by nature.
This dog friendly walk is wonderfully stimulating for dogs who enjoy woodland exploration. The steep, varied terrain provides excellent exercise, and the rich forest floor — damp earth, moss, rotting wood and seasonal fungi — offers year-round scent interest. Off-lead potential is moderate through the woodland interior, and livestock risk is low, making the paths relatively relaxed for dog walking. The riverside sections below add water access for drinking and paddling. Care is needed on the steeper rocky sections, but for sure-footed dogs this is one of Yorkshire's most rewarding woodland walks.
