Hadrian's Wall: Housesteads to Steel Rigg

Northumberland

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10Dramatic ridge-top circular along the most photographed stretch of Hadrian's Wall, dog friendly on lead with sheep and ground-nesting birds throughout.

This dog friendly circular links two of the headline car parks on the central Hadrian's Wall, climbing from Housesteads Roman Fort along the wall west across Cuddy's Crags, Hotbank Crags and the Sycamore Gap site to Steel Rigg, then dropping into the valley to return on the Military Road and quiet farm tracks. The exposed ridge gives huge views over the Whin Sill, Crag Lough and the Northumberland fells, with the Roman archaeology a constant companion.

The whole route crosses open grazing land used year round and is important habitat for ground-nesting birds, so dogs must stay on a short lead from the moment you leave the car park. The wall path is well defined but rough underfoot with several steep stiles, some narrow rock steps and short sharp climbs onto each crag, so it suits a fit dog. Pay-and-display parking at Housesteads (NNPA) and Steel Rigg, toilets and a cafe at Housesteads Visitor Centre, no facilities at Steel Rigg, no on-route water for dogs in dry spells.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hadrian's Wall: Housesteads to Steel Rigg dog friendly?

Yes, this circular walk is dog friendly and earns a solid 7.5/10 on our rating. It's a genuinely special route for dogs and owners alike, following the most dramatic stretch of Hadrian's Wall across Cuddy's Crags, Hotbank Crags and past the famous Sycamore Gap site, with sweeping views over Crag Lough and the Northumberland fells the whole way.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Hadrian's Wall: Housesteads to Steel Rigg?

Unfortunately not — dogs must be kept on a short lead for the entire route from the moment you leave the car park. The walk crosses open grazing land used year round, and the area is also important habitat for ground-nesting birds, so lead control is essential throughout rather than just in certain sections.

  • What should I know before visiting Hadrian's Wall: Housesteads to Steel Rigg with my dog?

The terrain is rough and the route includes steep stiles, narrow rock steps and sharp climbs onto each crag, so this one is best suited to fit, agile dogs. There's no on-route water for dogs during dry spells, so bring plenty with you, and note that while Housesteads Visitor Centre has a cafe, toilets and a shop, there are no facilities at all at Steel Rigg. Parking at both ends is pay-and-display.
