Hamstead Marshall and the Kennet Valley
Berkshire
The Kennet valley between Hungerford and Newbury is gentle, pastoral, and deeply underwalked, and Hamstead Marshall is one of the best entry points into it. The 8.2 km circuit leaves the village via green lanes and field paths, drops into the Kennet floodplain, picks up the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath for a flat central stretch, then returns by hedgerow track. No significant ascent anywhere, and the towpath gives the walk a reliable, well-surfaced backbone for the middle distance.
The canal through this section has a particular smell — waterweed, soft mud, willow, and the occasional duck erupting from the margins — and the towpath surface is firm enough to walk in most conditions. Field sections carry seasonal scent from pheasant and rabbit and the green lane return is worth lingering through for the hedgerow cover alone. Livestock are present in several fields on the route; leads for those stretches. The canal and green lanes offer relaxed off-lead ground.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, this is a lovely choice for a dog walk. The 8.2 km circuit takes in quiet green lanes, field paths, and a stretch of the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath , all well suited to dogs. The towpath in particular offers a firm, reliable surface and plenty of water access throughout the route.
There's good off-lead potential on the canal towpath and through the green lane sections. That said, several fields on the route have livestock, so you'll want to keep dogs on the lead for those stretches , it's worth checking ahead as you go.
There are no facilities on the route itself, so bring water and anything else you need , the nearest pub is in Kintbury if you fancy a stop afterwards. Parking is roadside in Hamstead Marshall village (RG20 0HU). Livestock are present in some fields, so a lead is needed for those sections, but the walk is otherwise relaxed and unhurried with no significant hills to contend with.
