Manifold Valley Trail
Derbyshire
The Manifold Valley Trail follows the trackbed of the old Leek and Manifold Light Railway through a broad limestone valley in the Staffordshire Peak District. The 8km circuit traces the valley floor where steep, tree-lined slopes rise on both sides and the River Manifold itself famously disappears underground in dry weather, swallowed by the porous limestone before resurfacing further downstream. The trail passes Thor's Cave, a dramatic natural arch set high in the cliff face, and Wetton Mill with its stone packhorse bridge. The valley has a sheltered, enclosed character that feels remarkably different from the exposed moorland above, with 284 metres of ascent when the route climbs to the valley rim.
Dogs should be kept on leads for most of this dog friendly walk, as livestock grazes the valley sides and the fields along the route throughout the year. The former railway surface is firm and kind on paws, and the river, where it flows, provides water access at several points. The steep climb to Thor's Cave rewards with dramatic views but requires sure-footed dogs comfortable on rocky steps. Wetton Mill has a small tearoom that welcomes dogs outside. The valley is sheltered from wind and dries out quickly after rain, making it a reliable option in mixed weather. Carry water for the upper sections where the river runs underground.

Manifold Valley Trail is a great choice for a dog walk, rated 9 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The former railway trackbed gives you a firm, paw-friendly surface for much of the route, the river offers water access at several points where it flows, and Wetton Mill's tearoom welcomes dogs outside. It's a well-established favourite for good reason.
Dogs should be kept on leads for most of this walk, as livestock grazes the valley sides and surrounding fields throughout the year. If you're planning to tackle the climb up to Thor's Cave, it's also worth noting that the rocky steps require sure-footed dogs , a lead gives you more control on that section.
A couple of things are worth knowing before you head out. The River Manifold famously disappears underground during dry weather, so you can't always rely on it as a water source , carry your own supply, especially for the upper sections of the route. The valley shelters well from wind and dries quickly after rain, making it a solid option in mixed weather, and the full 8km circuit includes 284 metres of ascent, so it's a decent outing rather than a gentle stroll.
