Maulden Wood
Bedfordshire
Maulden Wood feels genuinely explorable. Beyond the Greensand Ridge Walk, most of its paths are unmarked — a mix of old oak, birch, and field maple broadleaf, acid grassland clearings, and conifer plantation, all on the well-drained sandy spine of the Greensand Ridge. The 7.6 km circuit takes in the main woodland block, crosses south into Pennyfather's Woods, and returns through more open countryside with views across the clay vale.
It's excellent dog country in every season — bluebell scent in late spring, deep earthy leaf-fall in autumn, and the clean pine smell of the conifer sections year-round. The sandy substrate is kind on joints and stays walkable when other sites become heavy and wet. Dogs can run off-lead through most of the wood with the exception of southern grassland sections where livestock may be present. No facilities on site, but the Stone Jug pub in nearby Clophill welcomes dogs and is a reliable post-walk option.
