Mousehold Heath Circular Walk
Norfolk
Mousehold Heath sits on the eastern edge of Norwich, a surprisingly wild pocket of lowland heath, scrub and scattered woodland that has been common land since at least the 13th century. The 5km circuit follows a network of sandy paths through gorse, birch and oak, with elevated viewpoints looking west across the city skyline and the cathedral spire. The heath has a scruffy, unmanicured character that feels genuinely wild for an urban green space, with thick gorse cover giving way to open clearings and pockets of deeper woodland. Robert Kett assembled his rebel army here in 1549, and the place retains a sense of independence from the city that surrounds it.
This is a convenient dog friendly walk that offers more variety than its modest size suggests. Off-lead potential is moderate, with good stretches on the quieter heathland paths away from the main entrances. The sandy, well-drained ground means the paths hold up well in wet weather, and the gorse and scrub provide excellent scent interest year-round. Livestock is not a concern. The heath can get busy with other dog walkers, joggers and families near the car parks, but the further paths are quieter. Multiple entrances and car parks provide easy access from various points around the heath. A reliable option for a quick but satisfying outing without leaving the city.
