Newborough Forest and Ynys Llanddwyn Walk

North Wales

Dog Friendly Rating: 9/10 A longer Newborough route taking in forest trails and the full Ynys Llanddwyn island walk, with lighthouse ruins and sandy stretches.

This longer 10km circuit from Newborough Forest takes in the full sweep of the southwestern Anglesey coastline, threading through dense Corsican pine plantation before emerging onto dunes, wide beach and the tidal island of Ynys Llanddwyn with its ruined church, lighthouse and pilots' cottages. The forest section has a distinctive atmosphere, the tall pines filtering the light and muffling sound, before the landscape opens dramatically onto sand and sea with Snowdonia's silhouette across the strait. The extra distance compared to the beach car park start allows you to experience more of the forest's quiet interior before the coastal reward.

This is one of Anglesey's best dog friendly walks, with the combination of forest, dune and beach keeping dogs engaged throughout. Off-lead potential is moderate across the quieter sections, with leads advisable near the busier beach areas and on Llanddwyn Island itself. The pine forest floor carries rich resinous scent and provides reliable shelter in poor weather, while the beach offers open running and swimming. Livestock risk is low within the forest boundary. The longer distance makes this a proper half-day outing, and dogs should be comfortable with sand, which can be tiring on the legs over distance. Parking is available at the forest car park on the A4080. A walk that delivers something different at every stage.
