Nine Barrow Down Ridge Walk
Dorset
Nine Barrow Down is an ancient chalk ridge running across the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, crowned with a line of Bronze Age burial mounds that give the walk a sense of deep history. The 6.4km circuit follows the ridge at around 200 metres with 177 metres of ascent, offering uninterrupted views south to the Jurassic Coast and north across Poole Harbour and the Purbeck heathland. The ridge is fully exposed with no shelter, and on windy days the grass lies flat and the views stretch for miles in every direction. The chalk turf is springy and close-cropped, dotted with wild thyme and marjoram in summer, and the ancient barrows sit along the skyline like punctuation marks in the landscape.
Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as livestock grazes the downland and surrounding fields, so leads should be kept on where cattle and sheep are present. The exposed ridge means dogs experience strong scent-carrying winds from the coast, and the archaeological features add texture to what might otherwise be a straightforward ridgewalk. Water sources are absent on the chalk, so carry a supply. The terrain is firm and well-drained, making this a reliable option even after rain. Parking is available at a small roadside layby near Corfe Castle. The walk is particularly atmospheric in early morning or late afternoon light when the barrows cast long shadows across the ridge.
