Pagham Harbour Circular Walk
West Sussex
This dog friendly West Sussex walk circles the RSPB Pagham Harbour Local Nature Reserve, an internationally important coastal site of salt marsh, tidal mudflats, shingle, wet grasslands and reed swamp covering nearly 600 hectares. The route runs out from the visitor centre along the harbour edge, past the picturesque Sidlesham Quay with its old smock-mill house, and continues round towards Church Norton where the open mouth of the harbour gives huge views over Pagham Spit and the Solent.
Dogs are welcome on the public footpath under close, effective control, with the only restriction being the fenced discovery area inside the reserve where dogs are not allowed. The path is flat and easy on paws but can become muddy and waterlogged after rain, and the saltmarsh birds make leads sensible at quieter times of year. Parking is at the small RSPB visitor centre car park (£2 up to 4 hours, free for RSPB and Sussex Wildlife Trust members), and the Crab and Lobster at Sidlesham is a famous dog friendly stop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pagham Harbour Circular Walk dog friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome on the public footpath around Pagham Harbour, and it earns a solid 8/10 on our dog friendly rating. The route is flat and easy going, making it a comfortable outing for most dogs. The one exception is the fenced discovery area inside the reserve, where dogs are not permitted.
Can dogs be off lead at Pagham Harbour Circular Walk?
Dogs are allowed off lead on the public footpath, but the reserve's rich birdlife — waders, saltmarsh species and more — means keeping them on a lead is strongly advisable, particularly during quieter times of year when birds are less disturbed. The path skirts internationally important habitat, so close, effective control is the rule throughout. It's the kind of walk where a long line or a reliable recall will serve you well.
What should I know before visiting Pagham Harbour Circular Walk with my dog?
The path can get muddy and waterlogged after rain, so it's worth checking conditions and bringing a towel for the journey home. Parking is at the RSPB visitor centre car park (PO20 7NE) and costs £2 for up to four hours or £3 for longer — free if you're an RSPB or Sussex Wildlife Trust member. After the walk, the Crab and Lobster pub at Sidlesham is a well-known dog friendly stop, and there are toilets and a small shop at the visitor centre too.
