Pensford Viaduct River Chew Loop
Somerset
The Pensford Viaduct spans the River Chew valley on sixteen arches, a striking Victorian railway relic that dominates this gentle 7.2km loop through the Somerset countryside south of Bristol. The route follows the river through water meadows and open pasture, passing beneath the viaduct before continuing along quiet lanes and field paths through a landscape of hedgerows, willows and damp grassland. The River Chew is a modest, winding stream here, but its valley floor is rich with wildflowers in spring and the atmosphere is calm and unhurried. The terrain is almost entirely flat with just 50 metres of climbing. Seasonal flooding can affect the lower meadow sections after heavy rain.
Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as the route passes through livestock fields where cattle and sheep graze, so leads should be kept on through the pastoral sections. The River Chew provides water access for paddling and drinking at several points, and the meadow paths carry good scent from wildflowers and damp grass. The paths can be very muddy through the water meadows in winter and after rain. Pensford village has parking and the Rising Sun pub welcomes dogs. The viaduct itself is worth pausing at, its scale surprising in this quiet valley. A peaceful walk best appreciated at a slow pace, and well suited to older or less energetic dogs that enjoy riverside pottering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pensford Viaduct River Chew Loop is a solid choice for dogs, rated 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The River Chew offers several spots for paddling and drinking along the way, and the meadow paths are rich with interesting scents from wildflowers and damp grass. The Rising Sun pub in Pensford village welcomes dogs, so there's a good reason to round off the walk with a stop.
Off-lead opportunities are limited on this route, as much of it passes through livestock fields where cattle and sheep are grazing. Dogs should be kept on leads through these pastoral sections. That said, the gentle, flat terrain and relaxed pace make it a comfortable walk on the lead, and it's particularly well suited to older or less energetic dogs.
The lower meadow sections can flood after heavy rain, and the water meadow paths get very muddy in winter and wet weather, so waterproof boots and a towel for your dog are worth packing. The route is 7.2km and almost entirely flat, which makes it an easy outing for most dogs. Parking is available on Publow Lane near Pensford Memorial Hall (BS39 4HW), though spaces are limited, so arriving early on busy days is a good idea.
