Petworth Park

West Sussex

Petworth is one of Capability Brown's finest deer parks — 700 acres preserved almost entirely in its 18th-century form, with a lakeshore, an ancient oak woodland at the north end, and the ha-ha wall bordering the house gardens forming a natural boundary on the circuit. The 5.2 km walk from the town car park is almost entirely flat on mown parkland grass and gravel paths, making it the most accessible walk in this part of Sussex.

The deer herd at Petworth is a significant and well-established presence, and leads are mandatory throughout the whole park — this is strictly enforced by staff. For dogs that handle lead walking well, the park delivers something genuinely special: the ancient oaks are extraordinary, the fallow deer can be observed at close range, and the autumn landscape carries that particular smell of old grass, fallen leaves, and deer musk that's quite unlike anywhere else. The town of Petworth beyond the gates has dog-friendly cafés and pubs for a post-walk stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Petworth Park dog friendly?

Yes, dogs are welcome at Petworth Park, and it's a genuinely rewarding place to bring one. The 5.2 km circuit covers 700 acres of Capability Brown's parkland, with ancient oak woodland, a lakeshore, and a resident fallow deer herd , all preserved in much the same form as the 18th century. After your walk, the town of Petworth has dog-friendly cafés and pubs worth exploring.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Petworth Park?

No , leads are mandatory throughout the entire park and this is strictly enforced by staff. The rule is there to protect the established deer herd, which roams freely across the parkland and can sometimes be observed at close range. For dogs that are comfortable on a lead, it's still a wonderful walk.

  • What should I know before visiting Petworth Park with my dog?

The most important thing to know is that leads are required at all times, so it's best suited to dogs that walk calmly on a lead. The terrain is almost entirely flat on mown grass and gravel paths, making it one of the more accessible walks in this part of Sussex. There's a National Trust café and toilets at the park entrance, and parking is at the National Trust car park in Petworth town (GU28 0LF).
