Pevensey Levels Circular Walk
East Sussex
This dog friendly East Sussex walk explores the Pevensey Levels, a rare lowland grazing marsh of long straight ditches, willow-lined lanes and big skies that lies between the South Downs and the sea. The route starts at the formidable Roman and Norman walls of Pevensey Castle, heads inland across the levels along quiet drovers' tracks, swings around past the medieval Pevensey Court House, then loops back through Westham village.
Dogs are welcome throughout, and most of the levels are fairly enclosed by ditches making them feel safer for off-lead time, but cattle and sheep graze the grasslands year round so be ready to lead up at gateways. The terrain is dead flat which is great news for older dogs, but the ditches and clay paths can get very muddy and slippery in winter. There is a pay and display car park next to Pevensey Castle (£3 up to four hours, £4.50 all day), and dog friendly pubs in both Pevensey and Westham at the start or finish.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pevensey Levels Circular Walk dog friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome throughout this circular walk across the Pevensey Levels, and it earns a solid 7/10 for dog friendliness. The flat terrain makes it a great choice for older or less mobile dogs, and there are dog friendly pubs in both Pevensey and Westham at the start or finish of the route.
Can dogs be off lead at Pevensey Levels Circular Walk?
There are good opportunities for off-lead time across much of the levels, where the network of ditches naturally encloses the grassland and gives a sense of containment. That said, cattle and sheep graze the area year round, so you'll need to keep your dog on the lead at gateways and wherever livestock are present.
What should I know before visiting Pevensey Levels Circular Walk with my dog?
The clay paths and ditch edges can get very muddy and slippery in winter, so boots and a dog towel are a wise call for an off-season visit. Parking is straightforward in the pay and display car park next to Pevensey Castle (BN24 5LE), with charges of £3 for up to four hours or £4.50 all day, and there's an English Heritage cafe at the castle open in season if you fancy a break.
