Queen Elizabeth Country Park Woodland Trails
Hampshire
Queen Elizabeth Country Park straddles the A3 on the western edge of the South Downs near Petersfield, covering 566 hectares of chalk downland and beech woodland across Butser Hill and the surrounding landscape. The trail network ranges from gentle forest loops of 3.2km to longer hillside circuits of 9.7km that climb to Butser Hill at 270 metres, the highest point on the South Downs. The beech hangers on the steep chalk slopes are ancient and atmospheric, with their smooth grey trunks and green-lit canopy, while the open hilltop gives panoramic views across Hampshire and the Weald. With up to 466 metres of cumulative climbing on the longer routes, there is genuine hill exercise available here.
This is a flexible dog friendly walk where you can match route and distance to your dog's energy and fitness. Off-lead potential is moderate, with good stretches through the quieter woodland sections, though leads are sensible on the main paths where mountain bikers share the trails and where livestock grazes the open downland. The beech woodland carries rich scent from leaf litter and chalk earth, and the variety of terrain keeps dogs engaged throughout. The country park has a visitor centre, café and good parking facilities. The café welcomes dogs outside. A practical and well-managed walking destination with enough variety to warrant repeated visits.
