Rivington Pike and Terraced Gardens Circular

Lancashire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A Rivington classic combining the historic Lever Park terraced gardens with the moorland climb to Rivington Pike tower.

Rivington Pike rises to 456 metres above the West Pennine Moors, its square stone tower visible for miles across Lancashire and Greater Manchester. This 8km circuit from Rivington village combines the restored terraced gardens built by Lord Leverhulme in the early 1900s, with their stone follies, Japanese lake and overgrown grandeur, with the open moorland climb to the Pike itself. The lower gardens are sheltered and atmospheric, the stone terraces climbing through woodland with unexpected bridges and grottos, while the upper slopes open into heather moorland with panoramic views to the coast, the Lake District fells and Winter Hill. With 358 metres of ascent, the climb is satisfying without being gruelling.

This is a varied dog friendly walk that offers both sheltered woodland and exposed hilltop walking. Off-lead potential is moderate, with the woodland sections allowing more freedom than the moorland where livestock grazes. Leads are needed on the open moor where sheep are present year-round. The terraced gardens provide interesting terrain to explore, though some sections have steps and narrow paths. Water is available from streams in the lower sections but not on the upper moor. The Pike tower at the summit is a local landmark and the views from it are exceptional on clear days. Lower Rivington has the Great House Barn visitor centre and several cafés. Parking is available at Rivington village or the upper car park. A walk that combines cultural interest with genuine hill exercise.
