Severn Way, Shrewsbury Loop

The River Severn loops dramatically around Shrewsbury's medieval town centre, creating an almost-island that this 9.7km circuit exploits by following the Severn Way along both banks. The route takes in riverside meadows, mature parkland and the town's outskirts, with views across to the castle, abbey and the jumbled rooftops of the Tudor and Georgian town. The Quarry, Shrewsbury's famous riverside park designed by Percy Thrower, sits on the route and adds formal gardens to the wilder riverbank sections. The walking is entirely flat with just 55 metres of elevation change, and the river provides a constant focal point throughout.

This is a relaxed dog friendly walk that follows the water through a mix of green space and quiet urban fringe. Off-lead potential is limited on the busier sections near the Quarry and town centre, but the quieter stretches of riverbank on the outer loop offer more space. The Severn provides visual interest throughout, and the riverbank vegetation carries good scent. Livestock risk is negligible on this urban route. The paths are well maintained and mostly surfaced, making this a reliable all-weather option. Shrewsbury has excellent dog-friendly pubs including the Armoury on Victoria Quay and the Three Fishes. Parking is available in the town centre. A walk that combines genuine riverside countryside with easy access to one of England's finest medieval towns.
