Snelsmore Common

Berkshire

Snelsmore Common is small, intricate, and often overlooked, which makes it all the more satisfying to find. This Berkshire Wildlife Trust reserve north of Newbury covers barely 4.5 km of walking but packs in wet heath, dry heathland, birch scrub, and bog pools in a combination that is genuinely unlike anything else in the county. Boardwalks keep feet dry over the most sensitive sections; the rest is firm sandy heathland track.

The scent environment here is quite specific: the ferrous, peaty smell of wet heath and sphagnum sits alongside the drier gorse and sand notes of the adjacent heath, and dogs respond to both with intent focus that usually lasts the whole circuit. The bog pools offer drinking water and, for some dogs, a wade — though peaty water stains pale coats and should be factored in accordingly. Off-lead for most of the route, with leads needed near the managed heath sections in spring when ground-nesting birds are active.
