Staple Plain

Staple Plain sits on the open heathland of the Quantock Hills in Somerset, a broad expanse of heather, gorse and bracken-covered ground crossed by wide tracks that feel spacious and uncomplicated. This 5.6km circuit follows the main tracks across the heath with views extending to the Bristol Channel and Exmoor, rising gently to higher ground before dropping back to the start. The Quantocks have a quiet, understated character, less dramatic than Exmoor or Dartmoor but with a gentle beauty that rewards repeated visits. Multiple branching paths make it easy to adapt the route. With 119 metres of gentle climbing, the terrain is accessible throughout.

Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as cattle and ponies graze the open common throughout the year, and dogs must be kept under close control at all times. The heath carries rich scent from heather and gorse, and the open ground gives clear sightlines. The exposed position means the walk catches wind from the Bristol Channel, which can be bracing in winter. Water sources are scarce on the dry heath, so carry a supply. Parking is available at the Staple Plain car park on the ridge road. The Quantock villages below have dog-friendly pubs, including the Carew Arms at Crowcombe. A calm, open walk that works as a gentle introduction to the Quantock Hills.
