Tandle Hill Country Park Walk
Greater Manchester
Tandle Hill rises unexpectedly out of the streets of Royton, a 110 acre country park of beech and pine woodland, open grassland, and a breezy summit crowned by the Waterloo era war memorial. This dog friendly circuit links the lower woodland paths with the climb to the top, where on a clear day the view stretches from Saddleworth Moor across to the Manchester skyline and out toward Winter Hill. It is one of the best short walks in north Greater Manchester for big views without a long drive.
Dogs are welcome throughout and most of the woodland and summit grasslands see dogs happily off lead under good control, with leads needed near the car park, the cafe area, and the play area. Livestock is not present within the park, so the main reason to clip on is courtesy to other users on busy weekend afternoons. Underfoot is a mix of tarmac paths, compacted gravel, woodland bark, and grass, with a steady uphill pull to the memorial but nothing technical. The free car park off Thornham Lane is small and fills quickly, with on street parking just outside the park if needed.
