Tarka Trail: Fremington Quay to Instow

Devon

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A flat estuary trail along the Taw Estuary with big sky views across the water, excellent for dogs and straightforward year round.

The Tarka Trail follows a former railway line along the Taw and Torridge estuaries in North Devon, and this 7.2km section between Fremington Quay and Instow is one of the finest stretches. The flat, surfaced path runs alongside the wide estuary, with the landscape changing dramatically with the tide: vast mudflats and feeding waders at low water, a broad expanse of blue at high tide. Fremington Quay has a restored signal box café, and Instow at the far end has a sandy beach and the Johns of Instow restaurant. The views across to Appledore and the open sea beyond give the walk a genuine coastal character despite following an inland estuary. Just 30 metres of elevation change makes this as flat as walking gets.

This is an excellent dog friendly walk with high off-lead potential on the quieter stretches of trail, though the shared-use path carries cyclists so leads are sensible near busy sections. The estuary provides constant visual interest, and the tidal mudflats carry distinctive estuarine scent that most dogs find engaging. Instow beach at the far end offers sand and sea access. Livestock risk is negligible along the trail. The surfaced path is reliable in all weather, making this a dependable option year-round. Fremington Quay café welcomes dogs and has outdoor seating overlooking the estuary. A walk defined by tide, light and the calm expansiveness of the Devon estuaries.
