Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo Circular

Devon

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10Outstanding scenery and excellent river access, but dogs must be kept on leads throughout the Castle Drogo estate and wherever livestock are grazing along the route.

The Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo Circular descends from the National Trust car park above the gorge via the Hunter's Path to Fingle Bridge, then returns along the Foresters Track on the south bank of the River Teign. The 7.6 km route gains 227 metres of elevation and passes through ancient oak woodland clinging to the steep gorge walls, with the granite mass of Sharp Tor looming above the river. The lower path runs alongside fast-moving water over granite boulders, while the upper Hunter's Path offers wide views across the canopy. Castle Drogo — the last castle built in England — stands above the gorge at the start and finish, adding historical weight to an already dramatic landscape.

Dogs will find the riverside sections irresistible on this dog friendly walk, with the Teign running cold and clear and offering paddling access at multiple points along both banks. The enclosed gorge carries a distinctive mineral coolness mixed with the scent of damp moss and old oak bark. Dogs must be kept on leads throughout per National Trust requirements, partly to protect deer in Whiddon Deer Park. The Fishermans Path alternative over Sharp Tor includes steep stone steps that require careful footing, so the main route suits most dogs better. Bring water for the climb back up — the final ascent to the car park is sustained.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo Circular dog friendly?

Yes, this is a well-suited walk for dogs, earning a 7 out of 10 on our dog-friendly rating. The River Teign runs alongside much of the route and offers paddling access at multiple points along both banks, making it a real treat for water-loving dogs. The 7.6 km circular route through ancient oak woodland is varied and engaging, though the lead rule throughout and a sustained climb at the end are worth factoring in.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo Circular?

Unfortunately not , dogs must be kept on leads throughout this walk, as it is a National Trust requirement for the Castle Drogo estate. This is partly in place to protect deer in the adjacent Whiddon Deer Park, so it applies for the full circular route. It's worth double-checking lead rules locally if you're visiting outside the National Trust managed sections, but plan for leads on throughout.

  • What should I know before visiting Teign Gorge and Castle Drogo Circular with my dog?

The main circular route via the Hunter's Path and Foresters Track is the better option for most dogs , the Fishermans Path alternative over Sharp Tor involves steep stone steps that require careful footing and may not suit all. The final ascent back up to the National Trust car park is a sustained climb, so it's worth bringing water for your dog, especially in warmer weather. Partway round, the Fingle Bridge Inn makes a handy stop, and the NT café and toilets at Castle Drogo are available seasonally at the start and finish.
