Thorndon Country Park North Loop

Thorndon Country Park North offers a quieter and more natural woodland experience than many managed parks in Essex, with the 6 km circuit winding through mature oak, hornbeam and sweet chestnut on paths that feel more like countryside trails than park walkways. The 100 metres of climbing is spread across gentle undulations rather than any single hill, and the woodland has a wilder, less manicured character than the southern section of the park — fallen trees are left in place, undergrowth is thicker, and the paths narrow in places where the canopy closes overhead. The park sits between Brentwood and Basildon, easily accessible from the A128, with parking at the main visitor area.

This is a rewarding dog friendly walk with moderate off-lead potential in the woodland sections, where low livestock risk and enclosed paths give dogs freedom to explore the undergrowth and investigate fallen timber. The mature woodland floor is rich with scent year-round — damp leaf litter in autumn and winter, wild garlic in spring, dry earth and bark in summer. Cyclists share some routes, so keeping dogs aware of approaching bikes is sensible on the wider tracks. The terrain is gentle enough for dogs of all ages while the wilder character of the northern section provides enough interest and variety to engage more active dogs. A solid local walk that feels bigger and more natural than its urban-fringe location might suggest.
