Thorndon Country Park South Circular

Essex

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10An easy parkland and woodland circular through the historic Thorndon estate, dog friendly with a dedicated dog activity course on site.

Thorndon Country Park is a former 18th century deer park near Brentwood, now a 200 hectare mix of mature parkland, ancient woodland and grass meadows. The South Park is the dog walking heart of the estate, with a dedicated half kilometre dog activity course featuring jumps, ramps, tunnels and hoops, plus a network of marked trails through Hartswood and around the lakes.

Dogs are very welcome here, off lead in most areas if recall is reliable, but should be on lead in the grazed compartments and around horse riders on shared bridleways. The terrain is gentle and well drained: surfaced trails, woodland tracks and grass paths with no significant climbs. South Car Park has a fee but the price covers all-day access, with a visitor centre, cafe and toilets at the trailhead. Pay via MiPermit on arrival.

  • Is Thorndon Country Park South Circular dog friendly?

Thorndon Country Park South rates a strong 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness, and it genuinely earns it. The South Park is very much the dog-walking hub of the estate, with a dedicated half-kilometre activity course featuring jumps, ramps, tunnels and hoops, plus dog water bowls dotted around the park. It's a great spot for a relaxed day out with your dog.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Thorndon Country Park South Circular?

Dogs with reliable recall can enjoy off-lead time across most of the park, including the woodland trails through Hartswood and the areas around the lakes. The exceptions are the grazed compartments, where dogs should be kept on lead, and shared bridleways when horse riders are present — so it's worth keeping a lead handy.

Parking is pay and display at Thorndon South Car Park, costing around £6.30 for all-day access, and the recommended way to pay is via the MiPermit app on arrival. There's a visitor centre, cafe and public toilets at the trailhead, so you're well set up for a longer visit.
