Tolkien Trail from Hurst Green

Lancashire

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A Ribble Valley loop mixing riverside paths, farmland and woodland, with a pub stop in Hurst Green to finish.

The Tolkien Trail starting from Hurst Green traces a 9.7 km loop through the Ribble Valley landscape that is said to have fired J.R.R. Tolkien's imagination during his time at Stonyhurst College. The route follows the River Hodder south before climbing through woodland and crossing open farmland with long views toward the Forest of Bowland. Cromwell's Bridge — a medieval packhorse crossing — is a highlight along the river section, and the woodland stretches are particularly atmospheric in spring when bluebells carpet the floor beneath the oak canopy. The 124 metres of climbing is spread evenly across the circuit, with the steepest section coming through the woods above the river. The paths can be muddy after rain, particularly through the field crossings.

Dogs will enjoy the variety on this dog friendly walk, though moderate livestock levels mean leads are needed through the farmland sections where sheep and cattle graze. The Hodder provides the best moments for dogs — clear, shallow water running over stones with easy bank access for wading and drinking. The woodland sections offer richer off-lead potential where the path is enclosed and stock-free, and the scent environment shifts appealingly between damp riverbank, fungal woodland floor and open windswept pasture. Larger dogs should be prepared for stiles between fields. The Shireburn Arms in Hurst Green is dog-friendly and serves as a natural bookend to the walk.

This walk has everything for me. Woodland, fields, river - every environment a dog could want. I will say though, it's fairly long and wouldn't be suitable for dogs under a year or older dogs, a level of fitness would be required. There's minimal livestock, but some so plenty of off lead time but does require some control.
