Wansfell Pike (Ambleside)
The Lake District
Wansfell Pike rises to 482 metres directly above Ambleside, and the 10 km circular delivers a disproportionate amount of Lakeland scenery for its modest height. The route climbs via stone-pitched paths through Stock Ghyll Park — where the waterfall drops 21 metres through a wooded gorge — before breaking onto open fell and ascending to the summit ridge with commanding views across Windermere, toward the Langdale Pikes and over the Troutbeck valley. The return via Troutbeck village and the woodland of Skelghyll adds length and variety, turning a quick summit bag into a satisfying half-day circuit. The 502 metres of total ascent is concentrated in the initial climb, with the descent more gradual and sheltered.
This dog friendly walk offers moderate off-lead potential on the open upper fell, where the bracken edges and rocky outcrops give dogs purposeful terrain to work. The lower sections through Stock Ghyll carry the sound and scent of the beck long before it comes into view, and dogs tend to investigate the fern-lined banks with real focus. Leads are needed through Stock Ghyll Park where the path is enclosed, and on the Troutbeck descent where sheep graze close to the path — livestock risk is high through the farmland sections. The stone-pitched paths can be slippery when wet, particularly on the descent. Suits active dogs comfortable with steep, rocky terrain and owners wanting a proper fell walk within five minutes of Ambleside's dog-friendly pubs.
