Weald Country Park Woodland Loop

Weald Country Park covers 500 acres of former medieval deer park near Brentwood in Essex, and this 4.5 km woodland loop winds through mature oak, hornbeam and sweet chestnut with sections of open meadow breaking up the tree cover. The 89 metres of climbing is spread across gently rolling terrain — nothing steep, but enough undulation to provide views across the park and toward the Essex countryside beyond. The park retains its historic character with veteran trees, a walled garden and a landscaped lake, and feels spacious enough to absorb visitors without becoming crowded. Seasonal colour is strong here, with bluebells in spring and rich autumn tones in the mature canopy.

This dog friendly walk offers moderate off-lead potential, though leads are required in areas where livestock are grazing — cattle and sheep are present in some meadow sections, and high livestock risk means checking before unleashing is essential. The woodland paths provide the best off-lead opportunities, where enclosed canopy and low ground-level hazards give dogs freedom to explore the undergrowth. The mature woodland floor is rich with seasonal scent — damp leaf litter, fungi, wild garlic in spring — and the open meadow sections provide a change of pace with grass and wildflower scent. The terrain suits dogs of all fitness levels, and the park's size means you can extend or shorten the route easily. Parking is available at the main car park off the A1023.
