Westbury White Horse and Bratton Camp Circular

Somerset

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A chalk downland walk above the Westbury White Horse with the Iron Age Bratton Camp hillfort and wide views over the Vale of Pewsey.

The Westbury White Horse and Bratton Camp circular begins beneath the chalk figure carved into the escarpment above the Wiltshire plain, climbing quickly onto open downland where the views expand across the Westbury vale and toward Salisbury Plain. The 6.9 km route circles Bratton Camp, a substantial Iron Age hillfort whose ramparts still rise prominently above the surrounding chalk grassland, before following the escarpment edge with its dramatic steep slopes and returning to the White Horse viewpoint. The 182 metres of climbing comes mostly in the initial ascent, after which the walking is undulating but manageable on firm chalk paths and cropped grass. The sense of space and historical presence here is striking — the hillfort is over 2,500 years old.

This dog friendly walk has limited off-lead potential due to grazing livestock on the downland — sheep are regularly present on the chalk grassland, so leads and close control are needed through most sections. The exposed chalk paths and grassy tracks provide firm, clean walking, and the constant breeze across the escarpment carries scent from wild thyme, marjoram and the aromatic herbs that thrive on the thin chalk soil. The elevation provides genuine exercise despite the moderate distance, and the open terrain keeps the walk feeling expansive and airy. Toilets and a cafe are available near the White Horse car park. The escarpment views are particularly atmospheric at dawn and dusk when the light rakes across the vale below.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Westbury White Horse and Bratton Camp Circular dog friendly?

Yes, this is a well-regarded dog-friendly walk with a rating of 8 out of 10. The firm chalk paths and cropped grassland make for clean, easy walking underfoot, and the open downland terrain gives the whole route a spacious, airy feel that dogs tend to love. It's a genuinely enjoyable outing for dogs and owners alike, though livestock presence means it suits dogs that can be managed on a lead.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Westbury White Horse and Bratton Camp Circular?

Off-lead opportunities are limited on this walk, as sheep are regularly present on the chalk grassland across most of the route. You'll need to keep dogs on a lead and under close control through the majority of the 6.9 km circuit. The open terrain and constant breeze make it a stimulating walk for dogs even on the lead, with plenty of interesting scents from the wild thyme and aromatic herbs that grow on the thin chalk soil.

  • What should I know before visiting Westbury White Horse and Bratton Camp Circular with my dog?

The main thing to be aware of is the grazing livestock , leads are essential for most of the walk, so this isn't the place for a free-running session. The initial climb up onto the escarpment is the most demanding section, with 182 metres of ascent, but the paths are firm and the going becomes more manageable once you're up on the downland. There's a free car park at the White Horse, and toilets and a cafe are available nearby, which is handy for longer visits.
